We’ve worked with Nancy for many years, shaping Mozza’s brand story. This time, Nancy wanted to tell a more personal story: her family’s.
Perfect for a project inspired by legacy, the setting is the historic Hollywood Roosevelt hotel, Golden Era icon and home of the first Academy Awards. A high profile chef, a high profile space, and three new branded concepts: The Barish, a modern Italian steakhouse; The Lobby bar with casual dining; and Lorenzo’s wine and cheese bar, named for Nancy’s father.
Nancy engaged us to develop a unique identity for each space with collateral designs unifying all three as guests dined throughout the hotel. Yet, a brand narrative of gilded glamour felt obvious, even stodgy. Instead, we showcased the allure of a different story: Nancy’s paternal lineage. Her great-grandparents, the Barishes, fled Russian persecution to Canada in the late 1800s. Persevering in remote Saskatchewan, they were among the first Jewish farm settlers in all of Canada – and the first importers (and breeders to this day) of Scottish Black Angus cattle.
It’s a story with a different kind of glamour – boldness, perseverance, resilience.
A story we could relate to, that draws you in. Told through Nancy’s family photos of farmers and families forging a life and legacy, we crafted an elevated working class aesthetic to bring striking depth to the hotel’s opulence. Menus, coasters, matchbook, and environmental designs enhance the experience throughout, which feels like stepping into a stunningly upscale new, old world.
